More Than $66 Million in Volunteer Fire Relief Aid Distributed to Municipalities

Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor announced yesterday that his department has released more than $66 million in volunteer fire relief aid to 2,514 municipalities. Municipalities are required to distribute these funds to volunteer firefighter relief associations, which use these funds for allowable costs, including training and recruitment and retention.

The funding comes from a 2% state tax on fire insurance premiums purchased by Pennsylvania residents from out-of-state insurance companies. The Auditor General audits the volunteer relief associations to make sure the funds were spent properly.
