Commonwealth Revenue Ends Fiscal Year Above Estimates
The commonwealth ended the 2025-2026 fiscal year with revenues above projections. According to the Independent Fiscal Office, the overage was $1 billion or 2.1% over projections. Compared to the prior fiscal year, collections were $2.52 billion higher.
Sales and use tax collections were $293 million, or 1.9% over projections and 8.3% over the prior year. This was driven by non-motor vehicle purchases, which were up 5.9% over the prior year. Personal income tax collections for the year were $382 million, or 1.9% over projections, likely driven by strong capital gains, as non-withholding collections were up 6% and withholding collections were up 0.4% over estimates.
Fiscal year collections for the Motor License Fund totaled $3.2 billion, which is 2% above the estimate. This fund includes the gas and diesel taxes, as well as other license, fine, and fee revenues.
