The state Department of Transportation has released the 2026 liquid fuels estimates. The per mile estimate is $3,073.44 and the per capita estimate is $17.33. This estimate is lower than the $3,191.02 per mile and $17.99 per capita that townships received in 2025. Township officials can watch their mail for the individualized estimates, which are on the way in time for budgeting.  

To determine your township’s estimate, multiply the per mile estimate by your township’s official liquid fuels mileage and multiply the per person estimate by your township’s 2020 Census numbers. Add the two together for your township’s 2026 estimate, which will be deposited to townships on March 1 if all required paperwork is filed on-time.   

Finally, please note that the estimates are conservative and the final payments are often higher than the estimates, including in 2025.
