Water Conservation for Hotter, Drier Conditions in PA

Water Conservation for Hotter, Drier Conditions in PA

The state Department of Environmental Protection’s drought information website provides updates on current drought declaration statuses in Pennsylvania counties. Currently, 11 counties are under a drought watch, and an additional eight are under a drought warning. Given the hotter, drier conditions of the summer, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to take several simple steps to use water more efficiently and help protect local water supplies. Some tips for outdoor water conservation include:

  • Water early in the morning or at night to minimize evaporation. As much as 30% of water can be lost to evaporation during midday watering.
  • Collect rainwater for use on outdoor plants and gardens.
  • Check sprinkler heads to ensure water isn’t wasted on pavement or unwanted areas.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, driveways, and sidewalks.
  • Mulch garden beds to retain moisture and prevent weeds.
  • Set your mower blades higher to keep grass drought-resistant and healthier.
  • Check for leaks. Even small leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water each year.
