Skills Game Deadline Arrives This Week; PA Supreme Court Denies Extension
On Friday, the Pa. Supreme Court denied two requests to extend the deadline for legislators to pass a new law to regulate skill games. The Court ruled in June that skill games are considered illegal slot machines and gave a six-month deadline for the state legislature to act, which ends tomorrow.
As such, tomorrow’s deadline for removal of the estimated 70,000 machines across the commonwealth is now set. Legislators are not scheduled to return to Harrisburg until next Monday, October 19, and a deal to legitimize and regulate skill games does not appear to be within reach.
The Pennsylvania State Police continue to remind businesses and establishments that operate “skill game” machines about the October 13 compliance deadline and the plan for criminal prosecution and immediate seizure of the machines as of Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The PSP informational webpage at pa.gov/psp/skillgames provides businesses and establishments with additional resources and contact information regarding the skill games decision and compliance requirements. Businesses and establishments with questions should use the following resources:
- Establishments with a liquor license: Contact the local Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement office for assistance.
- Establishments without a liquor license: Contact the local police department or PSP station for assistance.
