Distracted Driving Data
According to PennDOT data, in 2025 there were 109,541 traffic crashes in Pennsylvania, of which over 9,000 involved a distracted driver, resulting in more than 300 serious injuries and 44 fatalities. Data shows that 60% of offenders from 2021-2025 were in their 20s and 30s and that 70% of offenders were males. Distracted driving crash data is believed to be underreported due to many drivers’ reluctance to admit to being distracted by a cellphone at the time of a crash.
To ensure you have a safe drive, remember to put down your cellphone. If expecting a text message or call, pull over and park in a safe location before using a device. If needed, activate your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature, silence notifications, or put your phone in an inaccessible location until arriving at your destination. In addition to safety, Pennsylvania state law now prohibits the use of handheld devices while driving (even at red lights and stop signs!).
Driver behavior was the leading factor in 70% of crashes that occurred on Pennsylvania roadways. In addition to distracted driving, impairment, aggressive driving, and other behaviors were listed as contributing factors. For more information, visit www.pa.gov/dotsafety.
