August 11 marks National 811 Day, which serves as a reminder that safe excavation begins long before the first shovel enters the ground. Beneath yards, sidewalks, and streets are utility lines that provide natural gas, electricity, drinking water, internet service, and more. 

A call to have underground utility lines located and marked helps protect homeowners, contractors, utility workers, and the critical infrastructure that communities depend on every day.  

Every time an underground utility line is hit, there is a risk to the contractors or homeowners who are doing the digging; to utility workers and emergency responders who are mobilized to deal with the damage; and to bystanders who live, work, or travel near the locations of the incidents. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is reminding everyone that one simple step can help prevent injuries, protect essential services, and avoid costly damage: contact Pennsylvania One Call by dialing 811 before digging. Homeowners may submit free requests. 

State law requires contractors and residents to contact PA One Call at least three business days prior to excavation, triggering alerts to all utilities within the intended digging area and prompting utilities to mark where their facilities are located. Learn more at www.PA1call.com.
