PUC Announces Annual Impact Fee Distributions for Townships
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission announced that it collected $243.9 million in natural gas impact fees for calendar year 2025, which will be distributed in early July. Counties and municipalities directly affected by drilling will receive $133.8 million of these funds. “Pennsylvania’s Natural Gas Impact Fee demonstrates the power of direct investment in local communities. By bypassing layers of bureaucracy, the Commonwealth ensured that funds reached the municipalities experiencing the greatest impact, and the results speak for themselves,” said PSATS executive director David Sanko. “Lawmakers should consider using this successful model for other statewide priorities. When resources go straight to local governments, projects move faster, taxpayer dollars stretch further, and communities see real improvements in infrastructure, public safety, and quality of life.”
The total amount collected is about 79 million more, or a 48% increase, over the 2024 distribution, primarily due to a higher average price of natural gas in 2025 and 442 new wells were drilled, a 45% increase over the prior year. Since 2012, more than $3.1 billion has been generated from natural gas impact fees.
