Public Information Shouldn’t Come with a Price Tag
Should residents have to pay to access public information? Should local governments be forced to spend taxpayer dollars on newspaper ads that few people read?
In a recent op-ed, PSATS Executive Director David Sanko argues that outdated state laws are blocking transparency and wasting public funds. Despite the fact that only 9% of Americans prefer print newspapers for local news, Pennsylvania still requires public notices to be published in them — even as more residents turn to township websites, newsletters, and social media for updates.
This isn’t just inefficient — it’s undemocratic.
Senate Bill 194 would give local governments the flexibility to post public notices where people actually look, online and in community publications, while still allowing traditional newspaper ads when appropriate.
Let’s bring transparency into the 21st century.
