PennDOT Announces Annual Awards for ARLE (traffic lights)

The state Department of Transportation announced more than $27 million in grant awards through the Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) program to support 51 safety projects across 44 municipalities statewide, including 16 townships. Here are a few highlights:

  • Palmer Township, Northampton County: $795,251.12 to signalize the intersection of Tatamy Road & Newlins Mill Road.
  • Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County: $148,946.16 for pedestrian upgrades at all eligible signalized intersections to include high visibility longitudinal bar crosswalks.
  • Connellsville Township, Fayette County: $66,000 to replace the signals, signs, and pushbuttons at the intersection of U.S. 119 and W. Blake Avenue.

The annual grant funding is supplied by fines from red light violations at intersections in Philadelphia. Projects improving safety, enhancing mobility, and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. Municipalities submitted 113 applications, totaling over $67 million in requests. Projects were selected by an eight-member committee based on such criteria as safety benefits and effectiveness, cost, and local and regional impact. Click here for the press release with the full list of approved projects.
