City Settles Sunshine Act Dispute for $20K
WTAJ reports that the City of Johnstown has approved a settlement with a resident who sued the city and the planning commission three years ago after he spoke on a zoning matter during a planning commission meeting. The crux of his claim was that his public comments were cut short of the time permitted by the city’s public meeting rules.
As a reminder, townships may adopt reasonable rules for public comment during meetings. However, it is critical to then follow these rules and apply them impartially to all who are participating during public comment, which can be limited to residents and taxpayers
