PennDOT Urges Emergency Responder Safety for National Move Over Day on Saturday, October 18
As National Move Over Day approaches on Saturday, October 18, the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is urging motorists to prioritize the safety of emergency responders and curb aggressive driving behaviors.
Township officials can help raise awareness of Pennsylvania’s Move Over Law, which mandates drivers to either safely merge away from emergency response areas or slow down to at least 20 mph below the posted speed limit when passing. These areas include scenes involving police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, road crews, or disabled vehicles with emergency signals. First responder and road crew safety depends on public compliance with traffic laws and responsible driving.
To combat aggressive driving, PennDOT will conduct an enforcement wave running from October 20 to November 9, targeting such behaviors as speeding, texting while driving, and violations in work zones. In 2024 alone, Pennsylvania recorded nearly 5,900 aggressive driving-related crashes and over 3,500 speeding-related incidents.
