Op-Ed Alert: Charging for Public Information Is Undemocratic — It’s Time to Break the Monopoly
We’ve just submitted an op-ed for publication that calls for a long-overdue change in how public information is shared in our state. As Pennsylvania celebrates its 250th anniversary, we believe it’s time to modernize outdated laws that require legal notices to be published in print newspapers — a costly and increasingly ineffective method.
Our piece highlights new data showing that only 4% of Americans prefer print newspapers for local news (Pew Research Center), and that social media has now overtaken TV and websites/apps as the top news source (Reuters/Oxford). It’s clear: Pennsylvanians deserve access to public information where they actually look for it — online, freely, and transparently.
Let’s make public information truly public — accessible, affordable, and democratic.
