Federal Government Partial Shut Down Starts – PA Budget Enters 4th Month Late

Today is the “1-day late” mark for the federal budget and begins a partial federal government shutdown after U.S. Congress failed to approve a budget for the new year or extend current funding. As the vast majority of Pennsylvania township services are not reliant on federal funds, townships should be able to continue providing essential services, such as transportation and public safety, uninterrupted. However, if your township is expecting a grant or other federal funding that relies on funds approved for a new federal fiscal year, funds will likely be delayed.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania is entering its 4th month without a state budget. The 92 day (and counting) spending level stalemate continues, but reports do not show much progress. Meanwhile, some counties and school districts and many nonprofits providing governmental services are struggling as the missed state payments add up. State Treasurer Stacey Garrity is making $500 million in short term loans available for critical county human services and Pre-K education.
