Road and Bridge Safety Award
Purpose: To recognize townships that have undertaken road or bridge improvement projects to increase public safety.
The contest is sponsored by PSATS, the Pennsylvania Highway Information Association, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and awards are presented at PSATS' Annual Educational Conference each April in Hershey.
Eligible Projects: Road and bridge improvement projects in which all or most of the work was completed within the previous year are eligible for the contest. The competition recognizes not only major, high-cost projects, but also any improvements that have increased public safety.
How to Enter: Application brochures are mailed to townships in December. Townships must complete the form and return it to their PennDOT district Municipal Services supervisor by the indicated deadline.
Entries should include a brief description of the project on a separate sheet of paper and before and after photos of the project. They also may include documentation, such as:
- Accident reports
- A video (up to 10 minutes long)
- A Power Point presentation (version 7.0b or lower)
- News articles
- Average daily traffic counts
A downloadable PDF of the guidelines and entry form will be available in December.
Judging Criteria: Judges will look at whether the project was cost-effective and improved safety conditions, the alternative solutions considered, whether the project was a cooperative effort with other municipalities or groups, and how well the entrant documented the solution. Projects must comply with PennDOT Publication 408 standards.
Contact Person: Brenda Wilt, PSATS Associate Editor, phone (717) 763-0930, fax (717) 763-9732, e-mail bwilt@psats.org.
Deadline for Entry: The brochure for the 2010 contest will be posted in December, with a deadline in March 2011.
