Custer Appointed to Township Association’s Executive Board

Douglas W. CusterDouglas W. Custer, a supervisor for Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, was appointed recently to fill a vacancy on the Executive Board of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors.

The 12-member board, which consists of five officers and a seven-member Executive Committee, is responsible for managing the affairs of the State Association. The board meets four times a year to oversee Association business and plan new projects that will benefit member townships.

Prior to his appointment to the Executive Board, Custer served on PSATS’ Townships Under 4,000 Population Committee and the Homeland Security Advisory Committee. A long-time township supervisor and roadmaster, Custer has served as president and first and second vice president of the Somerset County Association of Township Officials.

Custer also is active in a number of civic organizations, including the Shanksville-Stonycreek School Drug and Alcohol Board and the Somerset County Drug Task Force. In addition, he is a member of Glades Highlands Antique Iron Club, the Mountain Field and Stream Club, and a board member and volunteer coach for the Shanksville Little League. Custer and his family attend Faith Lutheran Church in the village of Wills.

The Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors represents Pennsylvania’s 1,456 townships of the second class and for the past 83 years has been committed to preserving and strengthening township government and securing greater visibility and involvement for townships in the state and federal political arenas. Townships of the second class represent more residents – 5.1 million Pennsylvanians – than any other type of political subdivision in the commonwealth.
