Newsletters and Web sites are no longer a luxury for town-ships
- they are a necessity, and they help local officials reach out
and inform a busy audience that gets its news on the run. They
can be affordable and effective if they are done right, but communicating
with the public isn't quite as simple as slapping words and photos
on a piece of paper or on a screen. There's an art to communicating
- and to getting the most benefit from the time, effort, and money
you invest in your newsletter or Web site.
When it comes to getting the word out about what makes their community
a great place, townships have to blow their own horns, and that
means knowing what to say - and how to say it. Whether you are
trying to boost your economy by attracting business and tourism
or just improve relations with residents, understanding how to
market your community can help your township put its best face
forward.
Tom Halicki, executive director of the National Association of
Towns and Townships, talks about national perspectives on the
threat of terrorism, what local officials should do to involve
their citizens in planning, and why even the smallest townships
need to be prepared for the unexpected.
