When it comes to road maintenance, there is one thing that every
township knows: You always have more projects than money to do
them. This can be frustrating, but experts say there are plenty
of ways to stretch your money and pave the way for longer-lasting
roads. Above all, you need an organized plan of attack.
Road maintenance techniques come and go, but one technique remains
reliable and effective year in and year out: good customer service.
When it comes to handling residents' road complaints, a smile,
a sympathetic ear, and an honest answer never go out of style.
Together, townships and PENNDOT share the tremendous responsibility
of caring for Pennsylvania's roads, and like a married couple,
they are linked for better or for
worse. The marriage has seen its share of rough roads, but township
officials who have given up on the relationship might want to
reconsider. In recent years, PENNDOT has reshaped its policies
to emphasize cooperation with local governments, and township
officials say that establishing a positive relationship with the
department is well worth the effort.
Neglected road shoulders are a leading cause of automobile accidents
in Pennsylvania. They also contribute to the deterioration, cracking,
and erosion of township roads. However, if road crews practice
good roadside maintenance each spring, they can prevent all of
these problems - and reap the benefits their road shoulders have
to offer.
