Often, new supervisors take office with enthusiasm and an eagerness to get to work improving their communities, only to find the true scope of the job intimidating. Freshman officials have discovered that being willing to listen and learn goes a long way toward making that first term a successful one.
Although state law mandates that all municipalities that have opted in to enforce the Uniform Construction Code must establish an appeals board, a number of townships have yet to do so. The good news is, it’s not difficult to set one up, whether creating a board for an individual township or a group of municipalities. (See Page 33 for a summary of the recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling on UCC inspections.)
With the 2010 Census just around the corner, townships are encouraged to work with the U.S. Census Bureau to help make it a success. A Complete Count Committee is an easy way for municipalities to ensure that every resident is counted.
At its winter meeting, the PSATS Executive Board discussed smart transportation, PSATS’ new Audit Committee, the Association’s recent intergovernmental cooperation survey, procurement cards, and other issues of interest to the Association.
PSATS representatives joined other members of the Pennsylvania Local Government Conference to meet with state lawmakers in February.
