Spring cleanup events can help beautify a community, eliminate potential hazards, and bring residents together. Townships say they’re an effective use of tax dollars and, in some cases, can even be a money-maker.
In this follow-up to last month’s cover story on earned income tax collection, the Township News looks at how local control over the process can literally pay off and what local government officials think of proposed changes to the system.
Few townships have adopted the home rule form of government, which allows for increased citizen participation and some flexibility in daily operations. Special interests are learning that one thing home rule can’t do is prevent unwanted land use.
Pennsylvania has too many deer — or is that too few? Townships are doing a balancing act, trying to manage local herds to preserve land, control disease, and prevent accidents, all while keeping hunters happy, too.
Historic preservation is playing an ever-greater role as townships plan for their future.
